INTRODUCTION We are the new generation and find that we are the dominant species. It is all ours: the resources of the planet, the natural forces that control it, and the hope to improve our prospects while we are here. Our competitive activities are motivated by nature and we can only overcome our civilization's blood-thirstiness by avoiding the need to compete. The only thing that is mysterious about the powers of nature is that many of them are not visible and clearly understood. This caused the ancients to attribute these to that of equally invisible heavenly beings. In those early eras they could not adequately explain the phenomena of which they were a part, and passed on their life skills and legendary beliefs from generation to generation. Since then we have had thousands of years to study and exploit the forces that seemingly control our destiny. We now realize that our species, as well as all other species on earth are fated to the struggles and strife of the competitive existence that natural circumstances impose upon them. We are the only species that is able to escape from the grip of the ever present powers of nature, or from the hands of the vengeful gods. We need to overcome the competitive existence that we have inherited. Our misunderstanding of the nature of our problems has prevented us from acting in a positive manner to avoid them. That should and must come to an end, and these discoveries; like parts of a torn map, will test our resolve to find a safe route toward our goal. Some of the pieces of the map are missing, but we can now determine in which direction we wish to go. |
